Lyme disease and chronic illness
Research areas
Lyme disease and other chronic illnesses are understudied and very common. We work on overlap, causes, and consequences of these illnesses using a variety of tools.
-
We found that Borrelia, which causes Lyme disease, infects the uterus, and Lyme disease increases risk of endometriosis, miscarriage, and other gynecological outcomes.
-
There is substantial overlap between chronic illnesses, and we’re using large healthcare record and survey data to understand why, how, and to what extent.
-
We identified SCGB1D2 as a risk factor for Lyme disease, and have been conducting genetic associations with narcolepsy, longCOVID, ME/CFS, Raynaud’s syndrome, fibromyalgia, and other chronic illnesses in an attempt to understand which mechanisms might be at play.
